THE LIFE CENTRES OF MAN - DISCIPLES OF JESUS
It is a fact known to all of you and it is proved historically that there were twelve disciples of Jesus Christ. He called them after His Baptism by John. The Baptism of Jesus is one of the great turning points in His life. We shall speak in greater detail about its deeper significance in a special lesson. It seems clear, however, that it is a milestone in the life of Jesus, because after His Baptism He called His disciples and began His public Work.
The disciples of Jesus – subsequently the Apostles – with whom the initial dissemination of the Work of Jesus Christ took place, were historical figures. After the descent of the Holy Spirit, they devoted themselves to the spread of the Teaching of Jesus Christ and this is the external side of the Work, with which the whole world is familiar.
Apart, however, from the familiar external side, the Divine Work also contains its inner Truth. The whole of the Work of Jesus Christ, as we have stressed many times, is marked by a Divine Perfection. This Divine Perfection will become understood with the evolution and spiritual elevation of humanity.
And in the case of His disciples, there are concealed teachings and operations of Spiritual Divine Laws which we shall attempt to analyse, and to contribute to the Divine Work being better understood by us, so that we are able to observe it. The number twelve, that of the disciples, always refers to spiritual completeness. The twelve disciples represent the twelve Life Centres within Man or the twelve capabilities, and were presented as living realities.
When a man is enlightened by the Truth, he has a duty, and he desires, to express it, that is, to advance in its service. The mind then should have the spread of the Truth as the most important and chief aim of the life of man. The various capabilities which previously had been concerned with worldly ways and interests now must be fully turned towards spiritual ideals.
We must always be aware that material things and functions represent spiritual realities. The ‘I Am’ within us, the inner Divine Light of every man, must apprehend and confirm the Spiritual Reality of the apparently material organs and functions and put all these under its Sovereignty and Guidance.
When the mind of man is concentrated on and concerns itself with materiality and the aims and ambitions of material life, then the Life Centres within us or the capabilities do not develop sufficiently. Every capability must be used for spiritual purposes and ideals if the Law of the Being is to be able to be fulfilled. Thus the scattered capabilities (disciples) are gathered together and come to a recognition of the Master (Mark 3:7-19).
These twelve Life Centres were called disciples and not followers or faithful or anything else because they must learn, they must be taught by the Master, who is represented in every man by the Divine Light which he bears within him, the ‘I Am’. They must be made subject to its instructions, they must work under the absolute power and guiding line of this inner Divine Light.
These disciples do not live far from the Master, or even at intervals away from the Master, but they follow Him everywhere. That is to say, the twelve Life Centres and functions in man must be at all times and constantly under the control and the enlightened direction of the Master. They must follow all His manifestations, His Teaching, and His works, until they are filled by Him.
If one Centre does not obey, then we have betrayal of the Master. That is, we open the door in our hypostasis for them to enter to arrest Him. That is, denial begins to occupy space within us. The Centre most sensitive to receiving vacillations is the Centre of the heart, which is where Love has its seat. Imperfect love towards the Master can cause the death of the spiritual life of man.
Not all the Centres-disciples are summoned to a state of alertness at the same time, nor do they follow the same evolution. All, however, receive the same inner teaching. They are taught the esoteric things of Divine Determinism, and of the Divine Determinism which concerns their soul and spirit. “And He said to them, To you it has been given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to those who are outside, all things come in parables” (Mark 4:11 and Matt. 13:11).
It is only then that the disciples will be able to implement the precept of the Master. “In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover” (Mark 16:17-18). That is, when they are made subject to the Light and so are taught by the Light, only then will they be able to function, to be manifested and to act as if they were the Light.
The result which will follow is a marvellous mutation or rebirth. “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). From above is only the Light; and one is born from above when all his spiritual-material functions enter on a new direction, when they are subject to new, that is, purely Spiritual, Laws.
The disciples surround the Master and supply every possible assistance for His smooth manifestation.
